Yá’át’ééh

I am Kyle Todecheene

Who I am…

I am Navajo. My Clans are Hashk’aan Hadzohi, born for Bit’ahnii, Maternal Grandfather is Todich’iini and Paternal Grandfather is Tlizi Lani. This is how Diné People (Navajo) greet themselves to other Navajos for identification and relation to one another.

Where I am From…

From Oljato-Monument Valley, Utah.

Education…

I have completed my education at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. I have obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Watershed Sciences Department with a Management and Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems program and a Minor in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) from the Quinney College of Natural Resources Department.

What inspired me to do photography…

Growing up, I was surrounded by photography, I subconsciously was fascinated by photos taken by National Geographic Magazines and being from Monument Valley over the years I became more curious about cameras that tourist carried around. I think, one think also that inspired me to start doing photography is the way of the life of my people (the Navajo people) and I want to document the culture and the land that we live on.

Gear…

First Camera - Photography became a hobby of mine after buying a Sony Cybershot H200. I was happy with that camera, but I wanted the ability to capture low light settings.

Second Camera - This began my research on DSLR cameras that had the capability of exchanging lens and this is where I bought the Canon T3i with the kit lens. This camera allowed me to explore journalistic photography by working at the Student Media Organization, the Utah Statesman of Utah State University.

Third setup, I have upgraded to a Canon 7d mark ii and with its companion the Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 lens, I also own a Canon Lens (50mm f1.8 STM) and two Tamron Lens (24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8).

Now, I have reduced my gear size because things were getting to bulky and were a hassle to carry around. So, 2020 gear has come down to a Canon EOS R and kept my Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 lens as well as, a Canon EF 50mm f1.8, I think that is all i need now. Just trying to live simple.
